Most of the sequence in the railway cutting has not been seen since that time, except for limited exposures in adjacent old quarries. The new excavations for the Weymouth Relief Road have realed a substantial part of the sequence described by Fisher. The Purbeck sequences are shown in photographs on this webpage. Study of the new exposures has shown that Fisher’s work was very accurate and reliable. The road cutting could be studied in a limited period of time necessary because the section was only open for about a week or so , using Fisher’s log, and noting additional sedimentary structures etc.
His log is reproduced below. It is of interest to summarise something of the history of this Victorian geologist. Osmond Fisher was of local origin. He was born on November 17, at Osmington, Dorset. He was interested in geology from a very young age. He graduated in mathematics at Jesus College, Cambridge in , then took holy orders, and in was appointed Curate-in-charge of the newly rebuilt All Saints’ Church, Dorchester, where he stayed for eight years.
While at Dorchester he made very useful observations on the geology of Dorset, including his study of the Bincombe or Ridgeway Railway Cutting. He was particularly interested in finding fossil insects in the ancient Purbeck strata.

As a small boy I was often taken out on the Malvern commons, adjacent to the former GWR line from Worcester to Hereford, and I would watch the trains as they went by – steam, of course, in those days – and the signals being cleared for each train and put back afterwards. My grandfather had been a stationmaster in Malvern and our whole family understood trains and signals. When I got a bit older, he explained how the signalling system works, and what actually happens inside those mysterious signal boxes – and I was hooked!
In my early teens I started travelling around on the railways, and in the summer I would get a week-long rover ticket covering the whole of the Midlands. I already had a camera by then, so I started to photograph as many interesting signals as I could find.

Mechanical models, signalling systems , communication tools and the evolution of operational protocols are preserved and chronologically displayed in the museum. The museum also displays the social impact and anthropological implications of the railways on the human geography of the multi-racial sub continent.
An open yard displays a wide array of relics which have become extinct on the railway lines around the world. The steam and electric locomotives , a German postal car, a saloon car used by the last Indian viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, and another saloon car belonging to the Maharaja of Jodhpur from the Jodhpur railways given as a wedding present to his daughter are a few examples.
