North Devon District Council  Heritage Grade I listed Since at least the mid th century a light has been displayed from the 14th century chapel atop Lantern Hill, to guide ships entering the harbour. The light remains operational, and is said to be Britain’s oldest lighthouse. The current lantern was installed by Trinity House in Regular worship in the chapel ceased at the Reformation , and for a time the building served as a cottage for lighthouse keepers before falling into some dilapidation.
