Tandem hot water heaters

Dislikes Received 1 I think your installer may be confused. The fan just delivers the flue gases to the vent system, natural draft takes over from there. If the fan was actually forcing all the combustion products up the vent pipe, it would be a different category of appliance, would use vent pipe that doesn’t leak when it is pressurized, and couldn’t connect into the same common chimney with your water heaters. The inspector is correct, the furnaces should tie in below the water heaters. If the water heater is on when this is happening, it can loose its draft and spill combustion products until the furnace lights. It doesn’t happen in every installation, or even every time in the installations it does happen with, but it is disturbingly common. IMO, the ideal solution would be to have separate liners installed, 1 for the 2 furnaces and 1 for the 2 water heaters. At the very least, have it fixed to at least comply with the codes.

Ben on October 10, – 1 Comment The efficiency of a solar thermal system increases as the temperature of the water flowing through the collectors decreases. This is just basic physics. Systems that are designed and operate with this principle in mind will generate energy more efficiently. For example, suppose a solar water heating system starts up in the morning with the solar storage tank at 70F. That means 70F water goes into the collectors to be heated.

My plan was to connect the stubbed ozone tubes to the tank heater in the basement and disconnect the electric heater. The hot tub sits at almost the same level as the base of the water heater. But I wondered whether the 5 foot tall heater if filled to the top would siphon into the tub and cause it to overflow.

In entry level RVs though, the water heater may only operate in LP gas mode. Water heaters in other motorhomes might operate by a third heating method called Motoraid see more below , which uses waste heat from the motorhome engine to heat the water as you drive. Finally, some high end RVs may have an entirely different system in which the water heater is part of a diesel and electric central heating system, typically either the Aquahot or Hydrohot brand names.

These systems are an entirely different animal and will not be discussed here. A few models are advertised as being 16 gallon heaters, but these are actually 10 gallon heaters that superheat the water and then mix cold water at the outlet, making them roughly equivalent to having a 16 gallon heater at the usual degrees. The RV water heater can be operated in either mode or both can be used to speed up the heating process. Both are controlled by a thermostat, so the heater only runs as needed.

In LP gas mode, a heater control circuit board insures safe operation, so 12v power is needed for it to operate. Most water heaters have separate thermostats for Electric and LP Gas modes and the two modes are pretty much independent of each other. It requires a fairly substantial amount of electricity, about 12 amps watts , so you may not want to utilize it if power is limited, or if you want to run other high power appliances like an air conditioner or microwave oven at the same time.

This is primarily a concern in RVs that have only 30A shore power wiring, or anytime the RV is plugged into an outlet that has 30A or less available. You can switch it off temporarily the water will stay hot for some time or change over to LP Gas mode. When you switch on the Electric mode on your RV water heater, the Electric Mode thermostat controls whether v power flows to the electric heater element or not.

There is no need to turn the heater off when not in use.

Tankless A tutorial for the homeowner and the professional The Basics Tankless water heaters have been sweeping the nation with a huge growth over the last 10 years or so. These are water heaters that do not have a tank. Many of the larger tankless companies have seen their sales grow by hundreds of percent each year!

Oct 03,  · Some water heaters will be right on the brink of backdrafting even with a proper installation, and all it takes is a single bathroom exhaust fan .

Southern California I think you can end up with something very similar to what “the Ipeman” achieved by connecting up both a tankless water heater and a standard tank water heater in series. You connect them with the tankless unit first. This would be essentially equivalent to a standard tank water heater with an increased the recovery rate or first hour rating. Another way to think of it is the tankless unit is acting as a supplemental hot water system that supplies pre-heated hot water to the tank unit.

A supplemental solar hot water system, for example, would work the same way. The unanswered question so far is how to set the thermostats in the two so one does not assume all the load. I think we will have to experiment some but my guess is that the thermostat on the first one should be set lower than the second one. This is a great question. I would tend to generally agree with Bob regarding the thermostat setting.

At the very least, lowering the maximum temperature of the upstream unit would lower the change of inadvertently generating scalding water. I would think that a tandem tankless then tank configuration would be less sensitive to the thermostat setting issue. The tankless unit could be of moderate capacity and still work well, be more efficient and reliable than a second tank unit.

When we got back home on Saturday night, I was ready for a long, hot shower. I unloaded the truck, and schlepped the contractor bag full of dirty laundry into the basement. Having been blessed with keen powers of observation, I immediately noticed the largish puddle that had formed under our water heater. Make a note of the height and width of the old water heater.

Aug 13,  · Hey Guys-I’m replacing my gas water heater with an electric one. I was surprised to read from multiple sources, including the manufacturer diagram, to use only a 10/2 conductor and connect the neutral to the 30 amp double-pole breaker to get the volts.

The obvious advantage for this heater is the price, which is pretty unbeatable. Since it is an electric heater, it will cost less upfront to install, and if it lasts even only a year and a half, it will pay for itself. Previous buyers reported that this one easily paid for itself in less than two years! It has a maximum flow rate of up to 4 gallons per minute GPM , which is very impressive at this price.

Such a high flow rate means you can be taking a shower while someone in the next room washes their hands. This latest version adds a user-friendly digital thermostat. It has a simple dial and very accurate temperature readout, accurate to within a degree. It has improved copper immersion heating elements and Cons: The flipside of being a small unit means that it is not the most powerful. Reviewers say that the flow rating might not live up to expectations in cold climates, especially in larger households.

By far the cheapest unit here, with a large flow rate for the price, the RTEX 13 is a great choice for small households and apartments.

Water heater replacement: pros and cons of tankless water heaters

Do you have enough ampacity in the panel you are feeding it from? What is the size of the breaker feeding that panel? And the size of the wire? Also if it is truly 14 KW you can’t use romex because it is only good for 55 amps and 14 KW volts is

Today we’ll explain the difference between the two main types of water heaters to help you choose the right one for your demands. We’ll also provide you with an overview of popular water heater sizes and how to choose the best one for you.

Should your heaters be wired in parallel or in series? Tweet This question comes up when there is more than one heater to be connected to power. Basically any number of heaters can be connected in parallel, but usually only two heaters are connected in series. Connecting more than two heaters in series becomes much more complicated. With heaters connected in series, if a heater fails it can affect the other heaters.

With heaters connected in parallel, the failure of one heater usually does not affect the other heaters. The most common pairing is usually a two piece heater. In this case, if the heaters are connected in series, the voltage of each heater must be equal to half the total voltage available. For example, two volt heaters connected in series across a volt supply. Also the wattage of each heater must be equal.

If the wattage and voltage of each heater is not equal, the heaters will not split the total voltage equally.

Why Water Heaters Backdraft, How to Fix

That makes them seem like a natural choice if you need to replace an aging, inefficient water heater — and they can be terrific in that role as long as you understand their minuses as well as their pluses. Where you live can play a role in your tankless water heater’s cost and performance. Tankless heaters produce hot water on demand, but because they raise water temperature in a short amount of time, they perform better when the temperature of the water they are supplied with is warmer.

That’s not an issue if you live in sunny Florida, but can be a major concern if you live in northern Maine see our discussion of the Ecosmart ECO27 below for an example. Even the largest tankless hot water heater can sometimes find it a challenge to produce enough hot water to supply all the needs of a busy household. The Department of Energy says that one way to overcome that is to either install two or more tankless water heaters to supply an entire household, or to install a separate tankless heater to supply a high-demand appliance, such as a dishwasher or clothes washer.

How do you hook up two water heaters? I have 1 for the kitchen area and two on the other side of the house for the living areas. It seems like the series setup is easier to hook up. I also assume that the first heater (from street) should be set 1/2 of your desired temp, and the second (going to house) set at desired temp? If this is.

It is also known as an instant water heater for sink, or under counter water heater, where the main advantages include space, water and energy savings when properly installed and used. It works perfectly as a single unit, combined with the distant whole-house tank-type unit or installed in-line with an existing tankless water heater, as a buffer, reducing the “cold water sandwiching”, delivering hot water fast.

Tankless type does not contain the water storage tank, but is providing an endless supply of hot water, while the tank-type has a limited capacity. One of the greatest advantages of under sink water heaters is instant hot water delivery saving time, energy and money. This way you don’t have to run long pipes from the central water heater; just plug this small water heater close to the faucet and enjoy an instant water delivery with the temperature that does not differs from the set one.

By buying a high quality under sink water heaters as listed and reviewed here, homeowner will enjoy the following benefits: The unit saves you money as it eliminates the need for expensive recirculating lines or pumps. Under sink water heater saves water efficiently as it is used where it is needed, at the point of use; kitchen sink, bathroom, laundry, garage, small cabins, boats and RVs, offices The product serves one or two faucets max.

Can a standard off-the-shelf tank style electric hot water heater can make a dump load? Electric tank water heaters are an excellent choice to make a dump load for your solar, wind or micro hydro power system as they are easy to get, cheap, already insulated and have holes to mount low voltage water heating elements. You can usually find a pretty good looking and quality electric hot water heater just about anywhere in the world that can be used either as: Even though an off-the-shelf tank style hot water heater can make a good dump or diversion load there are a few concerns such as: The water heating elements in a standard tank heater are made for high voltage either or volts The thermostats in a standard electric water heater are not made to handle DC and will either arc and stop working or catch fire When the tank of water becomes too hot, where do you send the excess electricity?

Yeah, it can be done and is done with some frequency. You can go either “series” or “parallel”. With parallel it’s best if the two heaters feed different bathrooms, vs being ganged together, so that you don’t have problems with balance.

A geothermal heat pump can be used for hot water, snow melt, ice-making, and even pool heating. Using a geothermal heat pump for hot water heating can actually make your heat pump even more efficient! A desuperheater captures the heat that is naturally lost by running the heat pump. As efficient as a geothermal heat pump is, there is a small amount of heat produced by the pump that is not used to heat your home.

A desuperheater captures this expended heat and pumps it to the hot water tank. Aside from the desuperheater you will not need any additional components. The desuperheater connects directly to the hot water tank drain. Even More Savings By using a geothermal heat pump for hot water heating you will greatly offset your current water bill costs. A geothermal heat pump can provide enough heat to your hot water tank to prevent the boiler or watermark from running just to maintain the heat in the tank.

Adding a desuperheater will not diminish the efficiency of your geothermal heat pump, nor will it cause your heat pump to work any harder. For most homeowners, utilizing a geothermal heat pump for hot water is a no-brainer.

The PhaseAMatic Static Phase Converter has a builtin weak link which is designed to fail rapidly if hooked to a higher horsepower motor. Rinnai tankless water heaters require volts AC, 60 Hz and less than 3 amps. The unit is powered with volts and contains two heating elements and two thermostats. Matchmaking Spartan Ops Is this the proper way to connect 2 water heaters in series? Laws Regarding Age and Dating When I say water heater,” I am referring to a 30gallon electric water Dating Sites Hartford Ct heater, but the same principles described below will apply to a 60 or 90gallon water heater.

Dec 14,  · So, since I don’t know where to buy a storage tank, I would simply use 2 heaters in series and since I don’t want to hook up a circulating pump as you would need when using a storage tank and a heater in series, I would simply hook up both heaters and be done with it.

After reading many reviews and research about this product last summer, plus getting local advise from friends who also have tankless water heater systems installed. I looked around at how they are installed and the local laws on how to do it properly. The major downside of buying this product on Amazon and DIY install is that you loose the warranty aspect, but like everyone else said that these things are rock solid and easy to maintain.

The first thing when you get this is the fact that its small and light. And when you open it up, you are just stunned of actually how much room is not being used inside the case too! Requires reading, of course. Otherwise not beyone what most home owner already know. I purchased this water heater from Amazon after 3 attempts to have Sears install a traditional 40 gallon short. Problems were so numerous but not relevant to this review.

Suffice it so say my frustration level reached to the point that I started thinking out of the box. I need hot water, my current one had died and I had already read several item about these type of water heater but really never consider them until I logged on to Amazon, I looked at their offering then went to Consumers Report plus consulted with a local plumber friend who, in the past had installed Rheem tankless water heaters but was not particularly impressed with them.

After reading about Takagi an extremely creative Japanese manufacturer at Consumers Report they rated this water heater as a outstand product but service was only fair. The box warns that the warranty is.
